I’d love to share with you a beautiful testimony from a dear church member whose life has been forever changed because of a simple invitation.

But first, if you missed last Sunday’s video, please take a moment to watch it.

Barbara Murray

A few short months after becoming a member of Church of the Holy Spirit, I was approached by a feisty “angel on earth,” who was relentless in her pursuit of me chairing the mission of her heart, the Altar Guild. She coerced my husband, Scott, and I into joining the Altar Guild ministry as a Sunday team, and I remember to this day when she wrote me an email asking me to chair the Altar Guild ministry. She wrote in her email that God had brought Scott and I to CHS because we were meant to follow Peter 4:10, which says, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” So even though I voiced every concern I had from, “I own my own business and don’t have adequate time,” to, I don’t know what the Altar Guild does or the correct terminology,” or even, “it makes me uncomfortable to pray out loud.” Let me tell you, between Barbara Whitlock‘s insistence and God whispering in my ear that this is where I belong, I finally stepped into the calling. And I am praying you will find this ministry is where you belong as well.

With that being said, I am coming to each of you requesting you to search your heart, and listen for God’s whisper that you are needed in the Altar Guild ministry. There are several ways in which you can serve.

  • Be a part of the Sunday Altar Team– Approximately one Sunday every 7-8 weeks you will be assigned a Sunday to ready the communion table. This can be done on Saturday or early Sunday morning. Then between services you straighten, refresh and ready the altar for second service. After the second service you will need to come back and clean and put away the sacraments. Then you have a choice, you can choose to take the linens home and clean them or have a member of the Linen Team do this part for you.
  • The second way to serve the Altar Guild ministry is to be a part of the Linen Team. The members of the Linen Team will serve when the Sunday Altar Guild teams need assistance with cleaning the linens about once every two months.
  • Still not sure either of these are a fit for you? Then how about joining our Altar Guild Decorating Team which takes care of decorating the Sanctuary for Christmas and Easter and requires a few hours for a couple days each season.

If you think we are not looking for you, you are wrong. We invite each and every individual, couple or family who feel God is leading them to this ministry to sign up for one of the teams. Serving with the Altar Guild you will find beauty, peace, and tranquility as you perform the task of setting our Lord’s table.

Please prayerfully consider joining us today. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Barbara Murray (barbara@chsroanoke.com/540-354-7090) or Terri Langford (terri@cabinetrywithtlc.com/540-793-5701).
