“Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Mark 1:16-17

The small words of an invitation seem small, really small. You invite someone to the pool. You ask someone how they are doing. You buy a friend a coffee and stop by to talk with them. “Come on,” “Let’s go together,” “I’ll pick you up at 6 pm”; all of those seem like such small words or comments. But are they?

Can you look back and see how one invitation, one suggestion, one small conversation made a big impact upon your life? I can look back and see how one invite to a camp, one cup of coffee with a good friend, one small gesture of love and support led my life down some really great roads.

We see in Mark 1:16-20 that Jesus issues a very short invitation to the fishermen, Simon and Andrew, to follow Him. This conversation was not some big theological debate or treatise. Jesus just offered a short invitation. This is the same kind of conversation we see the woman at the well have with her friends about Jesus. Her eyes had been opened by her conversation with Jesus and now she was inviting her friends to come and check out who He was (Luke 4:30).

“Come and see,” “I will go with you,” “How can I help you during this time,” “Can I share a story with you?” All of these are small but impactful moments where you and I can come alongside someone and help them to see, explore, talk about, investigate Jesus. This summer is a great time for these conversations. Do it while you are grilling, at the pool, in line at Kroger, passing a friend at the gas station, or walking the Greenway.

Then, next comes Alpha.

This fall starting on September 17 and running for 10 weeks, our church will again be offering Alpha. As you know, this is a great course made up of dinner, videos and round-table discussions that make for a perfect environment for you to bring your friends and discuss the things of life, faith, prayer, Jesus, God, and community. Add up all those small conversations combined with prayer over this summer and poof, God suddenly opens the door for you to invite that person to Alpha and engage them with love about the spiritual life.

Online registration will begin on August 1. In the meantime, you can send your small conversation friends to these sites to get their toes wet in all things Alpha.

This first link is our homepage for Alpha, where they can read more: Alpha @ CHS.

The link to register will be added to the page on August 1.

The second link is a short but informative video about Alpha: What is Alpha.

This past weekend I had one of those small and seemingly unimportant conversations that I am describing above. I saw my neighbor in between mowing and weed-whacking the yard, and he said, “Jimmy said I need to come to you for some conversations about spiritual stuff.” Well needless to say, I said, “Absolutely, let’s go get some coffee or lunch and chat.” That was it. Nothing fancy there. I pray God will open those doors for all of us this summer and help us to see and engage in all the little conversations about how awesome He is.
