For my Junior year of High School, my parents and I made the decision
for me to leave a small Christian School and enter public school. Like
many kids who have returned to the halls of learning the last couple
weeks, I was unsure and unconnected. I wanted to perform academically. I
wanted to be cool. But mostly, I wanted a place to belong and to be
The halls were packed with kids who had weird
colored hair, MC Hammer Velcro pants, and letter jackets. There was a
smoking patio for those students so inclined, and it seemed like fights
broke out every week. (Yes, I did live in the suburbs.) I was terrified.

There was one thing that gave me a place of
belonging and peace in this wild new world: a small group. A guy in
‘Campus Life,’ our local version of Young Life, befriended me and
invited me into a bible study with 7 other guys. We not only studied
scripture…we hung out. We watched movies on Friday night, went to each
other’s sporting events, double dated, and helped each other out with
studying. This group we called “TaSC ForCE” (a secret name that stands
for something even more secret), started my love for Christian Community
and made my last two years of high school a time of spiritual growth.
Later, we were in each other weddings. Many of these guys are still my
closest friends 25 years later.

My youngest son started High School this week
and it occurred to me he didn’t have any of the angst I had my first
day of freshman year. Why? Well, he’s in a Life Group from church. He
has 7 guys who study scripture together, watch movies together, etc.,

Scripture says:
And let us consider how to stir up
one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as
is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as
you see the Day drawing near.
(Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)

Consider this…join
a Life Group. Student Ministry is gearing up and new groups are
starting in the next couple weeks. If your student (7-12th grade) is
interested, please have them go to the 10am breakfast and teaching on
Sundays and we will get them hooked into a group with kids their age.

Adult ministry is doing the same. Couples’
life groups throughout the week, men’s and women’s groups, Divorce Care
(Tuesdays @ 7pm), and Celebrate Recovery (Mondays @ 7pm) are all getting
underway. If you are looking for connection with other adults, let me
know. Many life groups are kicking off in the next couple weeks, as well
as new ones starting. Please reply to this email and let me help you
get connected or talk to me at church. I’m the guy in the MC Hammer
Velcro robe.
