Marriage is a picture of our union with Christ. In marriage the husband is cast in the role of Jesus who loves his own bride, the church, supremely. Just as Jesus gave himself for her, so a husband is always to put his wife’s interests before his own, loving her unconditionally and sacrificially. Wives in this joyful drama portray a faithful church, who returns his love faithfully and respectfully, following his gracious leadership. In a covenant of mutual, self-giving love, empowered by the Holy Spirit, couples joyfully depict the gospel.
